Some of the basic information about DSL is that it is commonly known as the “always on" connection. DSL is an acronym for Digital Subscribers Line. This technological advancement makes it possible to transmit high-bandwidth information from one computer to another through the use of copper telephone lines.

This is basically how Very High DSL (VDSL), one of the four categories of DSL, works. The other three are called Asymmetric DSL(or ADSL, supports downstream data rates of from 1.5 to 3 Mbps and upstream rates of from16 to 640 kbps), Symmetric DSL (or SDSL, supports data rates of up to 3 Mbps) and High-data-rate DSL (or HDSL, supports data rates of up to or more than 1.5 Mbps). All of these technologies, also referred to as xDSL, make it possible to transmit more data over existing copper wires. DSL also carries both data and voice signals, making it possible to still accept an incoming phone call while online.
On the other hand, cable connection is for data transmission because it provides greater bandwidth than the usual telephone lines. Though usually costly than DSL, Cable Internet Providers offer faster connection speeds ranging from 512 kbps to 20 Mbps. A cable modem must also be used to initiate the connection.
Starting from the wires used to make the Internet connection possible, up to the connection speed the two promises to provide both its subscribers.
